This is a song I wrote after a memorable encounter with a man on a CTA bus. He seemed like he was living on the streets, and he kept up an awkward and offensive monologue the whole bus ride. If you regularly take public transit, you know, weird stuff happens a lot, right? But what stuck with me about this particular day is the way we collectively ignored him. We all silently avoided eye contact, like every single person on that full bus was pretending he wasn't there.
The chorus of this song is taken from Matthew 25, where Jesus points out the defining characteristic of people who follow him - care for those in need. I don't have any answers here on what we could've done differently that day; being the church to (and doing church with) homeless folks is complicated, confusing, and sometimes heart breaking. And I think we can do better.
I could do better.
